The Most Versatile Instrument in the World

One of the most common things I hear from new students is, “I want to play, but I don’t know what style to focus on.” That is the beauty of the guitar—it is the foundation for almost every style of music out there, and you don’t have to lock yourself into just one.

Exploring the Options and First Steps

Because I’ve spent 25 years mastering these different genres, we can build the lessons around your shifting interests. Here is what you can expect depending on what catches your ear:

Classical & Spanish: Played on nylon strings, this is where we dive into fingerpicking.

Where we start: We usually begin with Mauro Giuliani’s right-hand picking exercises to build muscle memory, or a simple melody like “Ode to Joy” to get you used to reading standard notation.

What to expect: We will spend time focusing on right-hand posture and planting your thumb.

Rock & Pop: Played with a pick on steel-string acoustics or electrics.

Where we start: We will dive straight into two-finger power chords. AC/DC’s “Back in Black” or Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” are perfect starting points for learning the aggressive, rhythmic feel of rock guitar.

What to expect: We will focus heavily on rhythm, holding a pick correctly, and muting strings you don’t want to ring out.

Let’s Find Your Style

When Should Your Child Start Guitar Lessons?

What Time is The Right Time?

Parents ask me this every week: “Michael, when is my child ready to learn the guitar?” While every kid is unique, I generally find that ages 7 to 9 is the perfect timeframe. By this age, they have developed the fine motor skills needed to press the strings and the attention span to engage in a focused 30-minute lesson.

Teaching with a Master’s Perspective

Having taught at CCISD and local colleges—and holding a Master’s degree in Music Education—I know how to break down complex musical concepts into fun, digestible pieces for younger minds.

What to expect: We focus heavily on small, achievable wins. We don’t force full, painful chords on day one. Instead, we work on basic finger dexterity, reading simple tablature, and keeping a steady beat.

Where we start: I usually start kids off with single-note melodies of songs they already know. The bassline to “Seven Nation Army” or the “Batman” theme are massive hits with younger students. They sound cool, they’re easy to play on one string, and they build up finger strength and confidence without overwhelming them.

Invest in Their Creativity

I maintain a quiet, family-oriented studio where your child can focus and make mistakes comfortably. Reach out today to book an introductory lesson for your child.

Nervous About Your First Guitar Lesson? Here’s What to Expect

Leaving the Pressure at the Door

I remember what it felt like to pick up a guitar for the first time. It can be intimidating! When you step into my studio, my first priority is to take all that pressure off your shoulders. My teaching environment is quiet, family-friendly, and completely focused on making music accessible to you.

What Actually Happens on Day One

During our first session, we won’t dive into heavy music theory or complex scales. I want you to feel comfortable holding the instrument first.

What to expect: We will go over the anatomy of the guitar, how to hold your pick without dropping it into the soundhole, and a simple mnemonic to memorize the string names (Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie is a classic). I will also teach you how to tune the guitar yourself, which is the most important skill a beginner can learn.

Where we start: My goal is to have you playing actual music before you leave. I love starting adult beginners with the iconic single-note riff from “Smoke on the Water” or “Sunshine of Your Love.” It gets your fingers moving on the fretboard immediately and sounds instantly recognizable.

Ready to Start?

No matter your age or skill level, you can do this. Give me a call to schedule your first lesson, and let’s start making music.

Why Live Guitar Changes Everything at Your Event

More Than Just Background Noise

Over the last 25 years of playing professionally across Corpus Christi, I’ve learned that while a playlist can provide background noise, live instrumental guitar breathes life into a room. It adds a layer of warmth, elegance, and adaptability that pre-recorded tracks simply can’t match.

Real-Time FeedReading the Room and Picking the Right Setlistback and Practical First Steps

One of the biggest advantages of hiring a live musician is the ability to pivot the vibe on the fly. I constantly read the room, adjusting my volume and tempo so I’m enhancing the atmosphere without overpowering your guests’ conversations.

Song recommendations for weddings: For seating guests, you can’t go wrong with classical staples like Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” For the processional, acoustic arrangements of The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” or Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” always hit the right emotional note.

Song recommendations for cocktail hours: I like to mix in upbeat rock and pop instrumentals—think acoustic covers of Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles—to keep the energy light and conversational while people mingle.

Experience You Can Trust

Planning an event is stressful enough. When you book me, you are getting a seasoned professional who shows up early, sets up cleanly, and delivers world-class instrumental music. Let’s talk about your vision and secure your date.

Why I Recommend In-Person Guitar Lessons Over Learning Apps in 2026

1–2 minutes
293 words

The Digital Wall

I see it all the time—a new student walks into my studio after spending six months fighting with a smartphone app or pausing YouTube videos, feeling completely stuck. Digital tools are great for getting your feet wet, but they can’t watch your hands. They can’t tell you that your wrist is bent at a dangerous angle, or that you’re muting the A-string because your thumb is in the wrong place.

Real-Time Feedback and Practical First Steps

When we sit down together for a lesson here in Corpus Christi, you get my eyes and ears on your playing immediately. I’ve taught over 1,000 students, and I can spot a technique issue in seconds before it becomes a painful habit. We don’t just stare at a screen; we tackle real mechanics.

What to expect: I will physically show you how to drop your shoulder and curve your fingers so your chords ring out clean and clear without straining your wrist.

Where we start: We usually kick things off with a simple 3-chord progression using G, C, and D. I highly recommend starting with a song like “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” or “Free Fallin’.” They use basic open chords but teach you the invaluable skill of transitioning smoothly and strumming in time.

Lessons Built Around You

An app gives you a rigid curriculum. In my studio, if you’re struggling with a specific transition, we stop and break it down. If you’re tired of hitting a wall with generic videos, let’s set up a session and get you moving in the right direction.
