Classical, Spanish, or Rock? How We Find Your Sound

The Most Versatile Instrument in the World
One of the most common things I hear from new students is, “I want to play, but I don’t know what style to focus on.” That is the beauty of the guitar—it is the foundation for almost every style of music out there, and you don’t have to lock yourself into just one.
Exploring the Options and First Steps
Because I’ve spent 25 years mastering these different genres, we can build the lessons around your shifting interests. Here is what you can expect depending on what catches your ear:
Classical & Spanish: Played on nylon strings, this is where we dive into fingerpicking.
Where we start: We usually begin with Mauro Giuliani’s right-hand picking exercises to build muscle memory, or a simple melody like “Ode to Joy” to get you used to reading standard notation.
What to expect: We will spend time focusing on right-hand posture and planting your thumb.
Rock & Pop: Played with a pick on steel-string acoustics or electrics.
Where we start: We will dive straight into two-finger power chords. AC/DC’s “Back in Black” or Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” are perfect starting points for learning the aggressive, rhythmic feel of rock guitar.
What to expect: We will focus heavily on rhythm, holding a pick correctly, and muting strings you don’t want to ring out.
